Studio Automated Powers Bundesliga's First Live AI Camera Feed at the Supercup
For the first time, a fully automated, AI-driven camera ran live inside the official Bundesliga host feed. During the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich at Signal Iduna Park on 22 August, our software operated a remote head for a box lens camera as part of the live production, delivering a tactical feed alongside the traditional broadcast. It’s a milestone we’re genuinely proud of, and one that only came together through close collaboration between several teams.
What happened on the night
A single AI-controlled camera was positioned on the main gantry, mounted on an Egripment HotHead 3 remote head. Our software analysed the live feed coming from the camera and drove the camera in real time, panning, tilting and zooming to follow the match the way a human operator would. Thanks to our zero-calibration, ultra-low latency solution, the tactical camera feed was then routed to the OB Truck where it could be colored/shaded in real-time alongside the other camera positions and delivered to a worldwide audience.
A team effort
This result was a shared achievement. The remote head hardware came from Egripment, part of the Broadcast Solutions Group, whose HotHead 3 is a fully digital, IP-based head that our software controls through its API. Sportcast, the DFL subsidiary that produces the host signal for every Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 match, integrated the feed into the live production and supervised the trial, and Sky came on board as broadcast partner. Bringing an AI feed into a match of this profile, on the same night as Sportcast’s wider “platinum” multi-camera setup, took careful coordination from everyone involved.
What comes next
The AI feed will be evaluated, with the aim of rolling it out more regularly across the season. For us, the value is straightforward: it gives production companies the flexibility to blend manual and automated work and to add cameras cost-effectively, without replacing the people behind the production. As our team put it on the day, this is about doing more within the same budget, not doing away with camera operators.
In addition to the tactical camera feed, Studio Automated provides bespoke AI models for main camera (camera 1), close-up (camera 2), 16-meter/offside camera (left/right), and high-behind goal camera (left/right). This gives production companies flexibility to enhance broadcasts through camera automation with the multiple camera angles, depending on the requirements.
